Shauna Shapiro, PHD
Shauna L. Shapiro, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Counseling Psychology at Santa Clara University and an internationally recognized expert in mindfulness. Dr. Shapiro's clinical work and research focus on the applications of mindfulness to help develop greater health and well being from the individual to the global level. Dr. Shapiro graduating summa cum laude from Duke University and received her doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Arizona, where she served as adjunct faculty for Andrew Weil's Center for Integrative Medicine. With 20 years of meditation experience studying in Thailand and Nepal, as well as in the West, Dr. Shapiro brings an embodied sense of mindfulness to her academic work.
She has conducted extensive clinical research investigating the effects of mindfulness training across a wide range of populations and has published over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles in addition to co-authoring the critically acclaimed professional text, The Art and Science of Mindfulness, with a forward by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Dr. Shapiro is the recipient of the American Council of Learned Societies teaching award, acknowledging her outstanding contributions to graduate education in the area of mindfulness and psychotherapy.
She lectures and leads mindfulness training programs internationally on the growing applications of mindfulness in psychology, health care, education and wellness, and is known for her engaging presentations which are practical and transformative. Dr. Shapiro has been invited to lecture for the King of Thailand, the Danish Government, Dean Ornish’s Preventive Medicine Institute, Nueva Innovative Learning, and the World Council for Psychotherapy, Beijing, China, and has presented her work alongside luminaries in the field including Jack Kornfield, Daniel Siegel, Joan Halifax, James Austen and Alan Wallace. Her work has been featured in the American Psychology Monitor, Wired Magazine, USA Today, Oxygen, The Yoga Journal, and the American Psychologist.
