Affect-based and Relational Healing Approaches to Complex Trauma
By John Briere, PHD
Trauma expert, Dr. John Briere, explains the five steps of emotional processing of trauma memory. He defines the early development of relational “gestalts”, within attachment experiences and in negative attachment relationship. He explores the different connections to emotions in trauma survivors and their behavioral responses. He shows how the therapeutic relationship can serve as a activator and resolver of negative relational schema. Much of treatment process is nonverbal/implicit, because schema are often non verbally-encoded; therefore it cannot be resolved by what the therapist says, but rather by what he or she does.
