Therapy with Teens in the Age of Facebook
By Dave Verhaagen, PhD
This new generation of teenagers uses technology as easily as they breathe. They are constantly texting, posting, commenting, and calling. They use technology to learn new information, maintain relationships, solve problems, and entertain themselves. These newer technologies pose challenges for therapists. Should we embrace these new technologies in our work? If so, how and where are the boundaries. This course begins with a model for engaging teenagers, discusses how and when and why technology can be used in therapeutic settings, and ends with some specific interventions for helping this new generation explore identity themes in therapy.
1. Participants will be able to articulate the four component parts of the CASE Model of therapy with teens.
2. Participants will be able to describe in detail three strategies to explore identity issues in therapy with teens.
