Working with Conflicting Principles: Eating Disorders & Diabetes
By Lorraine Platka-Bird, PhD
Dr. Lorraine Platka-Bird, Ph.D., R.D. and Rebecca Perdue, RN, BSN bring a specific focus in the area of treatment for patients with an eating disorder and diabetes in a residential treatment facility. They discuss the potential impact of some methods of diabetes education on the development of eating disorders in people at high risk. Also addressed are the difficulties encountered in helping patients relearn to eat intuitively while still effectively managing their diabetes. They will share some “real case examples”, filled with the challenges they have encountered working with these co-morbid conditions and the methods successfully employed to manage the challenges.
